10 Considerations Before Dieting

When people start a diet they are usually looking for a miracle to happen in a short space of time, usually guilt driven from so much indulgence over the festive period. Then come February, that motivation and enthusiasm withers away. Then it comes down to one thing: CONSISTENCY! I work hard to try to change people's habits all year round and this takes much more dedictation than a strict diet lasting 6 weeks. Some very lucky people can lose weight easily, but most people hit a stumbling block at some point, lose motivation and then pile the weight back on once their programme ends. Here are some things for you to consider.

Do you know the difference between long term and short term weight loss and the differences in approach required?

How many habits can you possibly change at any one time without losing motivation?

Do you have enough mental endurance to count calories every day?

Is it even necessary to count calories?

Would you ever think when starting a diet: Could I do this for the rest of my life? If not, you should.

Do you consider when contemplating a diet, how long you would be able to do it for?

Do you know the difference between a maintenance diet, non-maintenance diet and a strict diet? Are there easier ways to measure food without driving yourself insane? Have you evaluated your starting point? Some people are uber unhealthy, others are in the middle, some are more or less healthy but just need a few tweaks, which one are you? We might differ on opinions here. Are your goals realistic considering how long it has taken to get you to the stage you are at now? If it took 5 years of poor eating habits to put the weight on, is it really realistic/safe to lose it in a few weeks or even a few months?
