7 Reasons Why Sun Salutations Are the Best Way to Start 2015

1 - Discipline

Sun Salutations are a fantastic way to install routine and discipline into your life especially if this is what you have lacked in 2014. By doing them every day you are strengthening your discipline and will power which will have a knock on effect in all other areas of your life. Discipline is a skill that has to be practised. Doing Sun Saluations will give you a reason to get up earlier and go to bed on time.

2 – Concentration and focus

Because in each movement you are focusing your attention on nothing but the body parts being worked and breathing, all the mental clutter flowing through your mind is forgotten resulting in better levels of concentration.

3 –Foundations of mobility and core strength

I have prescribed the sun salutation everyday for someone who could not touch their toes. Within 3-4 weeks of doing 3-5 rounds every day, they managed to touch their toes for the first time since childhood. The sun salutation forms the foundations of most yoga postures and can massively help with other fundamental body weight exercises such as planks, press ups, squats and lunges.

4 – Treat it as an investment for your body

Sun Salutations can help calm the central nervous system, which helps regulate the use of stress hormones, in particular cortisol and adrenalin. Some postures provide gentle stimulation for the hormone glands helping them to regulate over time.

The digestive system is also stimulated and its function improved. Overall, there are very few parts of the body that do not feel some sort of benefit from sun salutations.

5 – You will see progress

Unless you are a professional gymnast, if you do 3-5 rounds of sun salutations every day for one month, you will notice significant progress both internally and externally. However, you have to be consistant and it will not work if you skip days or do not commit yourself to the cause. Even a gymnast who finds this workout too easy will gain mental and internal benefits.

6 – Better organisation and better sleep

Sun Salutations should ideally be done in the morning and evening. By waking up an extra hour early, you give yourself more time to yourself and more time to get things done. Your productivity will increase as well as your health and wellbeing. Doing sun salutations at night will help improve your sleeping patterns.

7 – It is accessible to almost everyone

The movements are gentle and simple. Some of them may require an extra shuffle of the hands or feet, but for the average person on the street, there is absolutely no reason why you can’t do the sun salutation. If you can’t do the plank straight away, this will come slowly with practice as your strength builds up. You just have to keep doing it and doing it until you can. You will discover the benefits of doing it far outweigh not doing it in the long run and will help prevent degenerative diseases.

Once you feel confident with all of the postures in the Sun Salutation, you can move onto more complex postures for further physical and mental benefits that penetrate right down to the cellular level.
