Exercise Intelligently

Do you do countless high intensity sessions on a bike or run for over 45 minutes several times a week and find your fat spots are not reducing?

If you jog or do the same exercise for more than 45 minutes, the stress and repetitive strain of the exercise may increase fat storage…Why? Because your body will produce cortisol in response to the stress of running for such a long time which in turn can cause your thyroid to slow down; causing all kinds of metabolic problems.

But why are endurance athletes thin? Endurance athletes have built up a brilliant ability to oxidise fat during exercise through precise diet and training. So basically their bodies are good at burning fat once their carbohydrate stores have been used. It is not easy to do and most of us aren’t anywhere near the standards of endurance athletes and we will start to burn muscle before fat. If you are overweight your body probably has an inability to oxidise fat during long, edurance type exercise.

That is not saying that you should never run or use a bike, you absolutely should; but you need a more diverse and varied approach to your exercise and to learn how to blend it into a well-balanced resistance programme for better results. Simply put, strength training increases muscle mass, which sets your body up to burn more fat. Muscle burns more calories than fat, and therefore you naturally burn more calories throughout the day by having slightly more muscle, this leads to a long term weight loss/maintenance strategy that lasts.

If you are determined and would like a long term plan why not try my online training? Or if you don't have the confidence to train alone yet, send me a message for more information about personal training.
